FOOTBALL: CHELSEA SET FOR MATIC TRANSFER TALKS

Chelsea are reportedly set to take a significant step towards beating Manchester United to the signing of Nemanja Matic with the agent of the Benfica midfielder to visit London this weekend to hold talks with the club.

According to the Daily Mail, Benfica are prepared to sell the player for around £25 million in the January transfer window and Chelsea are making moves to clinch the signature of the Serbia international.

Matic left Stamford Bridge almost three years ago as part of the deal that saw David Luiz arrive at the club and the 25-year-old has flourished since his transfer to Portugal.

He initially signed for Chelsea in the summer of 2009 but made only two first-team appearances for the club before joining Benfica, and his departure has proved something of an error of judgement.

Chelsea, though, may have to contend with interest from Manchester United if they harbour any serious intent of securing a deal for the player, with David Moyes too reported to be considering an approach for Matic.

Manchester United will strive to reinforce their midfield in during the imminent transfer period, and Matic would certainly be a high quality recruit if the Premier League champions are able to recruit him.

Along with Chelsea and United, Borussia Dortmund have also been credited with interest in the player.
